Bright idea: Bring us your old holiday lights

Don’t toss those old, unwanted string lights. Bring them to IREA. We will recycle them and donate the proceeds to Energy Outreach Colorado.

IREA customers gave us more than 6,500 pounds of old lights the past two years. This generated more than $2,500 for Energy Outreach Colorado, which helps low-income Coloradans meet their energy needs, pay for emergency furnace repair and learn more about energy efficiency.

We will accept unwanted light strands during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, through Jan. 31, excluding Christmas and New Year’s Days.

Bring yours to any of our four offices:

• 13404 Old U.S. Highway 285, Conifer

• 5496 N. U.S. Highway 85, Sedalia

• 1497 Main St., Strasburg

• 800 N. Highway 67, Woodland Park

Please make sure your lights are free of any packaging before you leave them in the marked box in each office’s lobby.

If you are replacing your holiday lights, consider buying LED lights. They are cooler to the touch and safer, more durable, and are up to 90% more energy-efficient.
