Holiday lights recycling kicks off Dec. 1

Getting rid of old, unwanted string lights this holiday season? Don’t throw them out. Bring them to any IREA location starting Dec. 1. We will recycle them and donate the proceeds to Energy Outreach Colorado.

Last holiday season we collected and recycled nearly 4,000 pounds of lights and donated $1,200 to Energy Outreach, which helps low-income Coloradans meet their energy needs, pay for emergency furnace repair and learn more about energy efficiency.

We will accept lights during regular business hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, through Jan. 29 – excluding Christmas and New Year’s Days – at each of our four offices. Lights must be free from all packaging to be accepted. They cannot be boxed or bagged. Consider replacing your old lights with LEDs, which are cooler to the touch, safer, more durable, and up to 90% more energy-efficient.
