Electricity plays a vital role in our daily lives, yet it’s one of the few hazards that offers no warning. When issues occur, the consequences can be immediate and serious. At CORE, safety comes first, and we’re committed to helping members understand how to reduce risk before incidents happen.
Key safety tips to remember:
Respect all energy sources
- Never assume equipment or power lines are deenergized
- Stay clear of damaged or downed lines and do not drive over them
Prevent common electrical hazards
- Do not overload outlets or use extension cords as a permanent solution
- Only use properly rated equipment, chargers and cables
- Inspect cords and plugs annually and replace them if damaged
Keep water and electricity separate
- Do not handle electrical devices with wet hands or while standing in water
- Never enter flooded areas where outlets or equipment are submerged
Be prepared for electrical emergencies
- Never use water on an electrical fire
- Use a Class C rated fire extinguisher
- Call emergency services and keep a safe distance
Stay aware of the structures and equipment
- Use caution when working near rooflines or service connections
- Follow proper setup and operating procedures for portable generators
We encourage members to take time to inspect their homes for potential electrical hazards and to contact a qualified electrician if problems are identified.
