Renewable Energy Credits (REC) Program

CORE offers the purchase of RECs as a simple way to support renewable energy generation without the commitment to solar panels or wind turbine installations on your property.

RECs serve as certification that 1 megawatt-hour of electricity was generated from an eligible renewable energy resource and distributed to the grid. Though REC participants do not receive green power to their home or business to a greater extent than any other member, RECs entitle them to claim the environmental attributes of the renewable energy represented by the RECs because the REC purchase has supported renewable energy production.

While many private companies offer RECs and similar commodities, CORE has created an REC program that makes the purchase of RECs affordable and easy for our members. We obtain RECs through wholesale power purchases and we do not add any additional fees to REC transactions. CORE’s current prices are:

  • Solar – 5.5 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh)
  • Wind – 1 cent per kilowatt-hour (kWh)

CORE members have the option of acquiring RECs as a one-time or monthly purchase. Your purchase will be added as a line item on your bill. For monthly purchasers, this will continue until you notify us you no longer wish to participate. Your selected purchase amount is in no way associated with your monthly electric usage and charges.

Renewable Energy Credits FAQs

Where is the renewable energy generated?

The RECs offered by CORE currently are generated by solar and wind farms in Colorado.

What benefit do I get from buying RECs?

Many people consider the purchase of RECs to be a simple way to support renewable energy generation without having to commit to solar panel or wind turbine installations on their own property. Though members do not receive green power at their home or business, RECs generally are perceived as a way for energy users to claim entitlement to credit for the environmental attributes of renewable energy.

Are REC purchases tax-deductible?

Not to our knowledge. Please consult your tax adviser for more information.

Is CORE affiliated with companies marketing RECs to CORE members?

No. We are aware of other companies promising to sell 100% renewable energy in our service area. The companies claim that, for every kWh of electricity used by the member, a kWh of wind energy will be produced. The member pays their bill to this new company, which, in turn, pays CORE what is owed for the member’s energy usage and collects an additional fee for this service. This arrangement is essentially a purchase of wind RECs, similar to those offered by CORE. Renewable energy is not actually delivered by these companies. Members who sign up still receive the same electricity from CORE they would otherwise receive.

Medical Certificates

Per CORE Electric Cooperative’s Rules and Regulations, we may postpone discontinuance or restore service to a residential account for 60 days from the date a member submits a Medical Certificate. Medical Certificates must be signed by a Colorado-licensed physician or health care practitioner acting under a physician’s authority, stating that discontinuance of service will aggravate an existing medical condition or create a medical emergency for the member or a permanent resident of the member’s household. One 30-day extension may be requested by submitting a second Medical Certificate prior to the expiration date or the original 60 day period.
