New meters on the way

IREA has begun initial deployment of the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) that eventually will replace the meters at all 158,000-plus locations we serve.

This initial deployment includes 1,000 homes in the Castle Rock area. We plan to continue rollout of the AMI in phases beginning this spring and expect to have all meters replaced by the end of 2020.

Each new meter provides safe and secure two-way communications between IREA and your point of service. This system will allow us to monitor and control our distribution system while maintaining our commitment to low rates.

IREA will be able to read meters remotely, better monitor our system and more quickly identify and respond to outages, blinks and voltage fluctuations. When the system is fully implemented customers also will have more choices and control over their energy use, as well as access to convenient cost-saving programs and payment options.

Customers will receive a mailed postcard approximately two to four weeks ahead of planned installation of their new meter. A door hanger with more information will be left for customers upon installation, or if installation could not be completed, allowing customers to call in to schedule a new install time.

Nearly 80 million AMI meters were installed in the U.S. as of late 2017, meaning close to half of all electricity customers in the country already are served by AMI. You can read more about IREA’s AMI project at www.IREA.coop/ami.
