IREA is working with legislators to make a regional transmission organization (RTO) a reality in Colorado.
RTOs allow generators and utilities to sell and purchase excess power in exchanges, which helps stabilize and lower costs and provides a market for excess renewable energy production during times of low demand and high output.
A study jointly commissioned last year by IREA and Holy Cross Energy found that more efficient and transparent transmission coordination within Colorado would result in savings for customers, job creation and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
